New Orleans East pharmacy has 1,000 people on their vaccine waitlist

A New Orleans East pharmacy owner said they have 1,000 people on their waitlist trying to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Joseph Nguyen owns St. Bernard Drugs in New Orleans East. He said phones have been ringing off the hook and it’s heartbreaking telling people they have to be put on a waitlist.

“It still kind of blows my mind,” Nguyen said. “People are calling and say hey I’m over 65 and I still can’t get an appointment. So that’s heartbreaking.”

Nguyen said they are getting about 100 doses a week from the state department of health.

“It’s a very small amount,” Nguyen said. “We will go through 30 a day we can go through a weeks’ worth in a few days.”

Nguyen said he’s asking his customers to be patient and he stressed they are doing everything they can to make sure their customers are taken care of.

“With this opening up to larger population we are going to be fielding a lot more calls and a longer waitlist unless the department of heath will be able to send us more doses,” Nguyen said. “The weather did impact us we didn’t get our shipment last week. We haven’t called to cancel our appointments we have been notified that they are still trying to get it to us but we may have to cancel this week if we don’t have enough coming in.”
