A Gretna Police Department officer has been arrested and accused of drunk driving in a police cruiser.
Gretna Detective Brittany Pujol was arrested in New Orleans and is now on leave, according to Gretna Police Deputy Chief Jason DiMarco.
According to DiMarco, around 2 a.m. Monday, NOPD alerted their department of the matter saying the investigation into Pujol’s arrest will be handled by the New Orleans Police Department.
“Once we were informed about that, we started the internal process,” said DiMarco.
However, there will be an internal investigation into the matter, according to DiMarco.
“The internal affairs division will go through it and see what policy infractions were violated,” said DiMarco.
According to Sunny Wall with Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, no one especially an officer should be behind the wheel impaired and the situation could have been worse.
“It’s Russian Roulette. Every one’s time comes up one way or another. You just hope and pray it’s not at the expense of injuring or killing another person out there on the road,” said Wall.
According to court records, Pujol has a criminal history. She was arrested for domestic abuse with a child present in 2023, according to court records.
DiMarco said an internal investigation was done into that incident, but no wrongdoing was found criminally.
In that case, the district attorney also refused the charges.
He added, they take all allegations seriously and want officers to know, their job is to uphold the law not break it.
“We’re going to hold them accountable on our end for that mistake,” said DiMarco
