The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a stabbing that injured five people over the weekend.
According to a news release issued Monday morning, a fight happened at the Orleans Justice Center and resulted in five people being stabbed.
The sheriff’s office said around 7:41 p.m. Sunday, a deputy and backup staff were called to help respond to the fight.
Multiple staff members responded to the fight, and a full shakedown of the unit was conducted to ensure safety and remove contraband, according to a statement issued by the sheriff’s office.
Four inmates were taken to a hospital for treatment while one inmate was treated by medical staff at the jail, according to the sheriff’s office.
The four inmates who were treated at the hospital have since been returned to the jail.
The sheriff’s office said the families of the inmates injured were notified, and all were offered virtual calls to check on their loved ones.
“Our priority is always the safety and security of both the individuals in our custody and our deputies who serve this community,” said Sheriff Susan Hutson in a statement. “We are taking this matter seriously and will continue to investigate thoroughly.”
