The mayoral race in Lafitte has intensified as another candidate entered the race just before the qualification deadline.
Two candidates will now face off to become the future mayor of Lafitte: Yvette Crain, a former clerk who is currently interim mayor, and firefighter Wilfred Wyman.
“I just love this community. I’ve been here for over three decades, and I just love the people here. My heart is here,” Wyman said. “I just want to do my part for the community as I’ve done for over 25 years.”
Crain qualified Wednesday, and her competitor Wyman hit the deadline in the last hour on Friday.
Whoever wins the vote will follow a nearly five-decade-long succession of former Kerner family mayors.
“Continue to work the levees. We have a few areas of the levees that are complete, and we are going to continue with the levee project,” Crain said.
“If you ride around and you see all the for sale signs, and the properties are still destroyed by the hurricane. I just want to see people back home, families get stronger,” Wyman said.
Crain said she plans to continue focusing on strengthening the levees while working to ensure that when another hurricane hits or a brush fire breaks out, the town will be able to mobilize quickly.
Wyman said he wants to see the community restored and population growth in Lafitte.
Election Day is Oct. 11.
