A construction company is suing the City of New Orleans over allegations of unpaid work on the Orleans Parish jail.
McDonnel Construction Services is suing the City of New Orleans, claiming the city owes them over $4.4 million due to major changes made by the city’s architect to a jail construction project.
The company says these changes added more time and money to the construction.
The new part of the jail, which will have 89 beds for mentally ill detainees, might not open until 2027.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson is against the project because she believes it costs too much.
Even though there are problems, the construction is about two-thirds done and should be finished by June 2026.
