A second New Orleans home was searched by US Marshals within less than 24 hours as investigators work to close in on escaped inmate, Derrick Groves.
That’s as the two remaining jail escapees have been on the run for more than one month.
WDSU Reporter Shay O’Connor was live from the Orleans Justice Center with an exclusive interview on how law enforcement searched a house to see if Groves has been in contact with his family.
Family members said they do not want the visits to escalate. They said they do not know where Groves is. They also described what happened after hearing law enforcement knocking on their door Tuesday morning.
Jasmine Groves, the aunt of Derrick Groves said, “It was like 12 cars, marshals out with their guns.”
Groves took video showing the large police presence around a home where she and her children were staying.
Groves said, “I tell them babies are in the house. One had a shield and went to go in.”
U.S. Marshals said they searched the home with permission and did not make any arrests.
“I don’t know where he at. I haven’t spoken with him. Who would I contact?” said Groves.
Convicted killer Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey remain on the loose. Groves’ family believes he was wrongfully convicted.
For the most part Groves has been largely unspotted since the May 16th escape. U.S. Marshals tell WDSU they went to the home to reinterview a close acquaintance of Groves.
The day before, a woman who lives in a home where Jasmine Groves used to live said US Marshals also paid her residence a visit.
Brian with U.S. Marshal’s Office said, “I am not saying the people today were not honest. They were actually. But we have had issues in the past where people have blatantly lied to us, and a person was in the residence or nearby.”
Marshals said they brought a large police presence; in case they found Groves. Groves’ aunt said “He hasn’t tried to contact me. Obviously, y’all would know. I’m asking what is the relevance? I know my rights.”
Groves is the daughter of Kim Groves. Kim was shot and killed in 1994. The hit was ordered by corrupt NOPD officer Len Davis, after Kim witnessed him beating a young person in her neighborhood.
Kim had been planning Jasmine’s 13th birthday.
Derrick Groves, Kim Groves’ grandson, was convicted of murder last October, after four trials. One resulted in a mistrial, another in a deadlock.
Groves and Massey remain on the loose. There is a $50,000 reward for information on each inmate.
If you know anything that could lead to an arrest, call Crime Stoppers at 822-1111.
