An inmate who was released in October has been returned to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.
OPSO Records staff said they were contacted on Wednesday by the Louisiana Department of Corrections regarding sentencing documentation for an inmate who was previously in custody.
When they reviewed the inmate population records, they discovered that the inmate had been released from custody on Oct. 16.
The defendant had pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and was placed on probation in 2018.
He was then issued a warrant after he failed to appear for a hearing related to his probation, and he was arrested on the warrant.
When he appeared before the court, his probation was revoked, and he was sentenced to one year in DOC custody and given credit for time served.
OPSO said the defendant was eligible for release, but he should not have been released until the Louisiana DOC completed its official sentence calculation and provided authorization for his release.
Once OPSO receives the official release authorization from DOC, the defendant will be released.
