The New Orleans Police Department and the New Orleans Fire Department issued a strong warning to parents after a child was seriously hurt in an online social media challenge.
NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick and NOFD chief Roman Nelson shared a video online warning parents of the fire challenge on social media.
The dangerous challenge involves people setting themselves on fire and filming it for social media, according to the National Library of Medicine.
Nelson and Kirkpatrick said a 9-year-old boy in New Orleans was recently hurt participating in the challenge.
According to Nelson, the child suffered burns to 70 percent of his body and is in “unbearable pain” and lucky to be alive.
Kirkpatrick stressed to children that the challenge is not fun or funny, and to not give in to peer pressure to participate.
Nelson urged parents to discuss the challenge with their children as well as other extreme behaviors on social media.
