The State Bond Commission has agreed to sell bonds to help fund critical infrastructure needs for the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board.
This comes after the city cancelled a meeting with the Bond Commission a few months ago after hearing the state would not provide a second loan to the city to help with its financial crisis.
Gov. Jeff Landry issued a statement saying that he made a commitment to the people of Louisiana to address critical infrastructure needs, and the use of state money was his way of keeping his commitment.
The statement read:
“We made a commitment to the people of Louisiana to address critical infrastructure needs, and we’re keeping it. Through the Bond Commission, we will fund the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board because infrastructure matters, and the people of New Orleans deserve results.
We will stand by the people of New Orleans while continuing to demand accountability from their leaders.”
The total amount that the bond commission is set to approve is $7.5 million and it will go towards the Carrollton Water Plant.
The City of New Orleans issued the following statement.
“I appreciate the collaboration with Governor Landry, Commissioner Barras, and legislative leadership on this effort and other key priorities for New Orleans. A recent LSU New Orleans survey showed that infrastructure is the top concern for our residents, but the survey also showed that people are finally feeling optimistic about the direction of our city. We need to build on that momentum. The more we invest in New Orleans, the stronger, safer, and more prosperous our city will become. I look forward to continuing to work together to deliver real results for the people of New Orleans.”
Chief Administrative Officer Joe Giarrusso confirmed he is aware of the funding, but is awaiting more information on the particulars of the financing.
The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board issued the following statement:
“The State Bond Commission’s approval reflects strong collaboration between Sewerage and Water Board, the City of New Orleans and our state partners to fund critical water infrastructure. The projects, totaling $7.5 million, were approved during the 2026 Legislative Session. The sale of bonds is the final procedural step to allow the funds to move to the Sewerage and Water Board.
“We appreciate the continued support of our city and state partners as we work to strengthen the water system for residents in New Orleans.”
The State Bond Commission will meet next week to formally approve the money.
