New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno presented New Orleans Saints legend Steve Gleason with a key to the city Monday.
A key to the city is the highest honor a mayor can bestow on a citizen.
Moreno presented Gleason with a key to his city to celebrate his 15 years of impact on the ALS community, as well as the 20th anniversary of his unforgettable blocked punt against the Atlanta Falcons.
Thirteen months after the storm changed life in New Orleans forever, with more than 1,800 people killed, 80% of the city underwater, the iconic Superdome left in ruins, the city’s tears of sorrow were turned into tears of joy, due in large part to Steve Gleason.
On the fifth play of the game, the Saints special teams captain blocked an Atlanta Falcons punt.
The play has become known as “Rebirth.”
Gleason was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, five years after his remarkable play during the Domecoming game.
His nonprofit has provided more than $65 million in care services, technology, equipment, and adventures to people living with ALS.
After receiving the key, Gleason gave a heartfelt speech at Gallier Hall.
Gleason thanked New Orleans for supporting him after his ALS diagnosis, going as far as saying that he wouldn’t be here now without them.
“You made this life possible,” Gleason said. “I’ve been given so much by this city, and 20 years later I still want to give something back. You have reminded me again and again that there is still beauty here. None of us are promised tomorrow, but look around. We are here with each other. I love you all.”
