A woman fired multiple gunshots in the Holy Cross neighborhood of New Orleans Wednesday, bringing on a SWAT team response and leaving a neighbor’s home riddled with bullet holes.
Shots were fired at a duplex near the intersection of Royal and Gordon streets. Police said the situation involved a mother and daughter inside one of the homes, when the mother opened fire.
A neighbor, who identified herself only as Beazzy, said her home, which shares a wall with the house where the shots were fired, was struck by at least 20 bullets.
“It looked like she was shooting towards my house, like inside my home,” Beazzy said.
Beazzy, who lives in the duplex with her two sons, said most of the bullet holes were in her children’s rooms.
“Thank God my kids wasn’t in the home when they was shooting. Because it’s more in my kids’ room than inside the home,” she said.
According to Beazzy, police knocked on her door earlier in the afternoon to ask if she had called 9-1-1. She told them she had not and saw officers knock on her neighbor’s door, but no one answered.
“I heard a boom right after the police left,” she said. “So once they left, maybe about 5 or 10 minutes, that’s when I heard the shot.”
After hearing gunfire, Beazzy said she ran out of her house and called 9-1-1. She said the shots just kept coming.
“It was scary,” she said. “I just didn’t think would happen to me.”
Police were called to the scene around 1 p.m., and the SWAT team arrived later, joined by the Kenner Police Department. Officers broke windows and used a drone to communicate with the women inside the home.
Authorities have not yet announced whether any arrests will be made as the investigation continues. Police thanked neighbors for their cooperation during the incident.
“We were able to really resolve this situation because of help, and we got out here quickly,” Chief Hans Ganthier, New Orleans Police Assistant Superintendent, said. “So, they were able to really help us in this, you know, making this out peacefully,” police said.
Despite the ordeal, Beazzy said she is not afraid to continue living in the neighborhood. Police are still investigating whether mental health issues played a role in the incident.
