A New Orleans lawyer convicted in a staged wrecks scheme is asking for a new trial.
Jason Giles is seeking a new trial and is alleging that prosecutors withheld evidence and obstructed his defense.
In a filing submitted Thursday, Giles’ attorney stated that the request is based on “the government’s flagrant violation of its constitutional obligations.”
The filing also claims that prosecutors “engaged in a pattern of active obstruction” by presenting testimony they knew was contradicted by evidence in its own files, blocking the defense from introducing relevant impeaching evidence at trial, and “willfully suppressing” the very documents that would have exposed its case as a “sham.”
Giles is still awaiting sentencing, and it is unclear when Judge Wendy Vitter will take up the request in court.
