Labor Day for many on the Northshore meant a day at Lake Pontchartrain.
Fontainebleau State Park attracted families near and far to spend their time off with those they love.
“We’re from Baton Rouge, so we wanted to get kind of like a beach experience,” one woman said.
Traditionally, Labor Day is observed to recognize contributions Americans have made to the Country’s strength, prosperity and well-being.
However, this looks and means something different for each family.
“It’s the time that I get to, you know, sit back and think about everything I got, about why I do everything I do every day, and I work every day,” a resident said.
“It means a lot. You know, coming from Vietnam, it means, like, freedom,” the Wynn family said.
While there was no grilling on the beach, it didn’t stop people from bringing tons of food for a picnic.
To stay cool, families took a dip in Lake Pontchartrain, and on the other side of Mandeville, families launched their boats and went tubing.
“I’ve had so much baseball and other activities going on, so we just been waiting for a weekend that we can all be free,” a Mandeville teenager said. “This was our first weekend that we were all able to come out here on the boat and just have some fun.”
Thunderstorms rolled through during the early afternoon Monday, forcing the teens and many others to come out of the water for a few hours, but once the storms ended, families ended up right back on the sand soaking in the sun for the remainder of the afternoon.
