The Rummel Raiders and UHigh Cubs played an epic regular season opener in Baton Rouge Friday Night.
The Raiders beat the Cubs 34-28, thanks to a game-winning drive by quarterback Colton Nussmeier.
The brother of former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and the son of Saints offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier fired a pass along the sideline to receiver Nathaniel Singleton Jr., who beat his defender for a 28-yard touchdown with :35 seconds left in the game.
The two teams played a scoreless first quarter.
Uhigh would get on the board in the second quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by running back Odell Corbin.
The Cubs led 6-0 after the missed PAT.
Rummel answers with a 27-yard touchdown run by running back Jaden Terrance to make it 7-6 Raiders.
These two teams kept trading touchdowns in the second quarter.
Corbin rips off an 80-yard touchdown run and UHigh converts the two-point conversion to take the 14-7 lead.
The Raiders get a 1-yard score from running back Coryan Hawkins, but the extra point gets blocked, leaving the Cubs up 14-13.
Then UHigh decides to get a little tricky.
The Cubs run a flea flicker as QB Knox Kiffin connects with wide receiver Kevin Smith Jr., who flicks it to wide receiver Emmanuel Moses for the 80-yard touchdown to make it a 21-13 game.
Nussmeier responds before the end of the half, dashing his way into the end zone for a 35-yard score.
Rummel trailed 21-19 at halftime.
the Raiders went into the fourth quarter trailing 28-19, but Nussmeier throws a couple touchdown passes.
The first goes to wide receiver Kirby Cade Jr. on a 21-yard hook up, then the game-winning score to Singleton Jr.
Rummel will host Vandebilt Catholic next Friday.
