New Orleans police have cleared their investigation into a deadly shooting on Freret Street early Friday morning.
Police say on Friday just before 4 a.m., they were called to the 4200 block of Freret Street due to an attempted suicide at the residence.
When they arrived, they found an unresponsive woman inside; EMS arrived at the scene and she was pronounced dead. At that time, police deemed the incident an unclassified death.
Upon further investigation, the victim was found to have sustained at least one gunshot wound, and the incident was reclassified as a homicide.
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office has identified the woman as Samantha Petry, 39.
Detectives eventually developed Desmond Cooper, 44, as a suspect in the shooting, which is believed to be domestic in nature.
Police say they were later advised that a suspect matching Cooper’s description had been located at the intersection of North Norman C. Francis Parkway and Iberville Street and was possibly armed.
As officers arrived at the scene, they heard a gunshot and soon after found Cooper suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was transported to a local medical center and was later declared dead.
Police have deemed the incident to be cleared by exception.
No further information is currently available.
