A severe thunderstorm warning was issued Sunday afternoon for parts of southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi.
The National Weather Service said the warning covers northeastern Washington Parish in Louisiana and northwestern Pearl River County in Mississippi. It is in effect until 4:45 p.m.
At 4:05 p.m., the storm was about 8 miles east of Varnado, or 11 miles northwest of Poplarville, moving south at 20 mph.
The storm could produce wind gusts of up to 60 mph and hail as large as 1.25 inches in diameter, according to radar estimates. The weather service warned that the hail could damage vehicles, while strong winds could damage roofs, siding and trees.
Locations that could be affected include Bogalusa, Varnado and Crossroads.
People in the warned area should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and remain indoors until the storm passes. The storm is also producing frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.
