The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Sunday, as temperatures could feel as hot as 115 degrees. An Extreme Heat Watch is also in effect for Monday.
New Orleans and Jefferson Parish have opened cooling centers for residents.
City officials urge residents to stay inside, cool down, drink water and know the symptoms of heat-related illness and when to seek medical care. Symptoms include:
- Muscle cramping
- Unusually heavy sweating
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Weakness
- Nausea
The city of New Orleans is providing the following resources for residents who need help beating the heat:
New Orleans Recreation Development Commission services
On Sunday, August 16, the Treme Center (900 N Villere St, New Orleans, LA 70119) will operate from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. as a daytime cooling center for residents looking to escape the heat.
Suspension of Service Disconnections
Entergy New Orleans does not disconnect on days that NWS has issued a heat advisory, which is expected to last throughout the rest of this week. Residents can call 1-800-ENTERGY to report outages.

Jefferson Parish is also providing the following resources for residents who need help beating the heat:
The Jefferson Parish Library’s East Bank Regional and West Bank Regional branches will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Residents are welcome to utilize these facilities to stay cool. All other Library branches will follow regular hours; for locations and hours, visit www.JPLibrary.net. Residents in need of assistance can contact the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center at (504) 349-5360.
