The Krewe of Oshun will make history in 2027 when their king and queen reign as the first Asian American pair to lead a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade.
Quoc and Amanda Nguyen were both surprised when they got the call to be the king and queen of Oshun for 2027.
“Initially it came as a complete shock. We were both lost for words,” Quoc said.
“It was more like this invitation is not only being extended to both of us, but to also our community,” Amanda said.
Krewe officials say this marks the first time an Asian American king and queen have reigned together over a New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe and parade.
Their family is rooted in the Crescent City. Quoc was born and raised in New Orleans East. His family is excited to see him reign as king, especially his 102-year-old grandfather who served in World War II.
“I want them to always think, can this be me? I want them to know it can be,” Quoc said.
As the Nguyens prepare to take the reign, their excitement is not only for making history but also for the sights and sounds of Mardi Gras and the crowd.
“Really being there on the float, seeing the energy from the crowd. That’s what really gets us going,” Amanda said.
