Tropical Storm Lala likely to form in the Central Pacific, and it could head towards Hawaii by this weekend.
Invest 93C, located southeast of Hawaii, now has a HIGH 90% chance of developing into a tropical depression or named storm within the next seven days. If it reaches tropical-storm strength, it will be named Lala.
While confidence in development is high, there is still significant uncertainty about the track and intensity. Models are still working to determine how this setup will evolve.
Due to the strong El Nino in the Central Pacific, water temperatures are unusually warm which favors strengthening but some dry air will inhibit intensification. A tropical storm or hurricane appears possible.
A general turn westward toward the Hawaiian Islands is anticipated, but it’s too early to know how close it may come or what impacts Hawaii could experience. At a minimum, increased seas/surf, rain chances by Saturday-Sunday.
