A stolen car crashed into an apartment in New Orleans, sparking a police chase that ended with the arrests of two men after an hours-long search.
Public Information Officer Danny Berrincha from Troop NOLA said Monday afternoon, police spotted a car which was reported stolen Sunday. When police tried to pull it over, the driver took off and crashed the car into an apartment. The driver and passenger then made a run for it.
Berrincha said the passenger was quickly arrested, but police closed off the area around North Villere, Marais, Governor Nicholls, and Esplanade Avenue to search for the driver, who they thought had a gun.
The search went on for about three hours and involved a drone, dogs, and the SWAT team. The driver was eventually found hiding with a gun under a home on Esplanade Avenue around 5 p.m.
“We’re in a new era now,” Berrincha said after WDSU caught the arrest on camera. “I mean, the tolerance for this kind of behavior, we have none. You know, we want the people to feel safe, we want the children to be out and playing and we want to stop all this nonsense. You know, New Orleans needs to come back.”
Berrincha said both men were likely taken to the hospital after their arrests because of the car crash. He said no one else was injured in the crash or the police chase that followed.
