A piece of a SpaceX rocket is expected to crash into the moon overnight! It’s traveling approximately 5,400 mph, and scientists estimate the collision could create a crater 65 to 90 feet wide.
The debris is the defunct upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket launched from Kennedy Space Center on January 15, 2025.
The upper stage weighs about 8,800 pounds, roughly as much as two average cars, and is expected to strike near Einstein Crater around the western horizon of the moon.
Impact expected around 1:35 a.m. CT Wednesday morning.The impact likely won’t be visible to the naked eye, but strong telescopes may briefly capture the flash or debris plume. There is no danger to Earth.
