The Orleans Justice Center announced Monday that an inmate was found dead in his cell.
The inmate was found around 6:30 a.m. when jail employees were conducting rounds on the Second Floor Housing Unit E.
According to a news release issued by the jail, OPSO employees tried to render life-saving efforts until medical services arrived.
The Coroner’s Office was notified to begin an investigation into the inmate’s cause of death.
According to a statement issued by the jail, OPSO is working to identify and retrace the inmate’s last several hours in the facility.
OPSO’s statement said in part:
“The OPSO Investigative Services Bureau is working with Orleans Justice Center supervisors to determine all factors which may have contributed to this incident, and are fully cooperating with New Orleans Police Department detectives, who were notified pursuant to standard protocols following a suspected in-custody death.
“This matter remains under active investigation. We are working through standard protocols to notify the next of kin. No further details about the identity of the deceased will be released at this time. We will provide updates as appropriate.”
