A four-day statewide academy is helping school nurses prepare for medical emergencies as students get ready to return to classrooms across Louisiana.
Care-Eleven School Health is hosting the training program for new and experienced school nurses. Thursday’s session focused on CPR and automated external defibrillator readiness.
Organizers said the academy is designed to ensure nurses can respond to emergencies in different areas of a school campus, including classrooms, gymnasiums and athletic fields.
“We have more and more students returning to schools with greater health conditions,” organizers said. “We want to make sure nurses are ready to go to take care of those students in schools.”
The training also includes refreshers on stopping severe bleeding, conducting hearing and vision screenings, and understanding mandatory reporting requirements.
Organizers said the goal is to give school nurses the skills and confidence they need to care for students when medical situations arise.
