The family of Nolan Wells met Wednesday with Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath.
Ben Crump, an attorney for the family, called it “a very respectful” meeting.
“She shared with the family that there will be a grand jury that she will turn this case over to once they have collected all the information, and finished their investigation. We will have a mutual inspection of the cellphone with our experts and their experts,” Crump said.
Crump said former law enforcement experts will help download data from Wells’ cell phone in coordination with the district attorney’s investigators.
Wells disappeared after a Fourth of July boat trip with friends to Horn Island. One of Wells’ friends told “Good Morning America” that when the group left, Wells stayed behind with a girl he had just met. His body was found near the island on July 6.
The coroner’s initial findings were that Wells drowned. Since then, two autopsies have been performed, but the results have not been released.
Sheriff John Ledbetter told “GMA” that investigators don’t want to rush the case, and they need time to gather the facts. He urged anyone with information to come forward.
“We’re getting about 50 to 100 calls a day from people who were there on Horn Island, people who are familiar with people who were there on Horn Island, so we remain steadfast in getting to the truth of Nolan Wells’ death,” Crump said.
Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, said the funeral for her son will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 20, at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs. A repass will be held for family, friends and teammates at the Jackson County Fairgrounds.
“We want to celebrate him. He would not want us sitting around crying and eating, so what we’re going to do is have a party to celebrate him,” Wonsley said.
