One person was injured in a shooting early Saturday in downtown Hammond, according to police.
“It is an absolute shame that people act like this. It shows their complete disregard for everything when a police officer is standing so close and they still commit this type of act,” Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. said.
Police working in the downtown district heard multiple gunshots at about 2:09 a.m. and responded to the area to locate the source of the gunfire, police said.
Officers secured the scene and later determined that one person had suffered a gunshot wound.
The victim was taken to North Oaks Medical Center for treatment and is expected to recover.
Police said the injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
During the preliminary investigation, officers attempted to interview the victim and his brother, but police said both refused to cooperate with investigators.
The shooting remains under investigation.
Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information, photos or video related to the incident to contact Hammond police at (985) 277-5701 or Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa at 1-800-554-5245.
Callers can remain anonymous, and information leading to an arrest may be eligible for a cash reward.
