The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate a stabbing at the Orleans Justice Center that happened between two inmates.
New details were revealed during a Criminal Justice Meeting Monday morning.
Officials say one inmate attacked another inmate with a homemade weapon during a fight.
The housing unit was placed on lockdown, and the OPSO Special Response Team conducted a shakedown following the incident.
Officials say both inmates were injured.
The alleged attacker was taken to the hospital, and the other inmate was treated at the jail.
During a criminal justice meeting, council leaders asked Orleans Parish Sheriff Michelle Woodfork about her plans to improve jail safety.
She said her focus is on strengthening infrastructure issues and continuing patrols.
“We’re going to continue changing those locks on the first and second floor and of course put materials that cannot be peeled away from a door or window seal that they can use to make home made weapons,” said Woodfork. “Supervision and shoring up our infrastructure is a way to stop those types of incidents from happening.”
Woodfork also said that security footage of the incident is being reviewed and that someone is expected to be charged.
