Mayor Helena Moreno and Deputy CAO of Infrastructure and Director of Public Works Steve Nelson announced an extension of FEMA infrastructure funds.
Those Joint infrastructure and recovery funds were set to expire at the end of June. Through an extension, the city now has until June 2028 to continue projects.
“This will be the last chapter in the Katrina recovery. And it’s something that we’re really, really excited to see happen today,” Nelson said.
Moreno explained the significance of the extension, and what would’ve happened if it wasn’t achieved.
“We would have had to close up projects that are ongoing now, and then we would have had to try to figure out other means to try to cover the remaining projects that would be in the queue, which meant that we would have to divert bond dollars,” the Mayor said.
Mayor Moreno says Gayle Benson, among congressional leaders, helped orchestrate the deal.
