Thousands of people are in southeast Louisiana for a special celebration commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
New Orleans welcomed tall ships to the riverfront today, as it’s the first stop along the Sail 250 celebration. Businesses across the area are gearing up for large crowds.
“We can’t wait to celebrate the 250th anniversary of this country and what a beautiful view to do it on,” said Roger Eyles, general manager of the Delacroix.
Several tall ships sit along the Mississippi River; it’s a statement commemorating an American milestone.
“We have coastal cuisine with a lot of Cajun influence,” Eyles said.
Roger Eyles with the Delacroix restaurant says they spent months getting ready for Sail 250. This weekend, they have increased their staff to accommodate extra customers.
“We’re excited for the crowds, it’s such a family event. I think everyone is going to come out, especially locals,” Eyles said.
The business is preparing to serve up oysters. It is feet away from a ship, that sailors call “The Liberty.”
The military sailing vessel, typically used for training, is lined with colorful flags, including one representing Argentina, the country it traveled from.
“It was impressive just the scale of the ship and intricacies of the sails,” said Patricia Boulet-Fontenot.
The six-day display is a part of a nationwide celebration leading up to July 4, which marks the United States 250th anniversary.
People filled the riverfront on Wednesday, getting an up-close look at the ships. New Orleans is the first of five stops as part of Sail 250.
Starting on Thursday, people will have a chance to get on board ships and take a tour.
Some restaurants, including Delacroix, are offering discounts to military veterans through this weekend.
