As the weather gets warmer, competitive golf throughout the Gulf Coast heats up with championship matches nearly every weekend, and that includes a 107-year-old men’s tournament, which, for the first time, may feature a woman.
Tulane University golfer Sophia Macias is on the cusp of making history.
“I’m not very nervous or anything,” Macias said.
Which is good, because next week at English Turn Golf Club, she’ll be trying to qualify for the most prestigious event in the state, the Louisiana Men’s Amateur.
“They’re just players, and they happen to be guys too,” Macias said.
Guys she competed against and beat before.
“I’ve actually played in my men’s club championship, and I set the record low there. So that was like a really big. So this is not my first time playing in a men’s event,” Macias said.
An 18-year-old who just wrapped up her freshman season uptown, Macias recently shot 3-under par in the American Conference Championship, so she feels ready.
“I feel pretty good. I feel pretty good. I’ve been working with my mental coach a lot, and he’s super awesome. So along with that, I’ve also been in the gym a lot trying to get some extra yards,” Macias said.
As for extra motivation, the Denham Springs product has that too.
“I think it opens a lot of doors for younger golfers behind me who kind of want to do the same thing,” Macias said.
There is just one problem: as a college student who enjoys sleeping in, Macias’ tee time is a potential hazard.
“Oh yeah, I said 7:30 am. That’s a little crazy. I don’t think I’ve ever had a tee time that early, but we’ll see. It’ll be fun,” Macias said.
If Macias qualifies for the Louisiana Men’s Amateur, she’ll be playing with the best of the best from around the state the first week of June at Metairie Country Club.
