The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board has reported that it has stopped the flow of sewage into the Industrial Canal.
The flow was stopped around noon on Monday.
Last Friday morning, SWBNO Director Randy Hayman announced the agency now has the equipment to make repairs.
Over the weekend, crews continued to work on stopping the flow of sewage on the west and east sides.
The Sewerage and Water Board said the break, involving a 54-inch sewer force main, was caused by a vessel’s anchor around 7 p.m. Friday.
Officials said they were not alerted to the damage until Saturday morning.
The sewer main break spewed more than 40 to 50 million gallons of sewage into the water.
Samples were collected from three locations in the Industrial Canal, and high levels of fecal coliform were found.
SWBNO says they will continue to collect samples to understand the extent of the sewer main break and any issues.
The Florida Avenue Bridge will remain closed as repair plans continue.
Alternate routes in and out of St. Bernard include the Claiborne Avenue Judge Seeber Bridge, the St. Claude Avenue Bridge, and LA 47 (Paris Road/I-510).
SWBNO and divers are continuing to work on a repair plan to create a permanent fix.
