An inmate at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center has died while in custody.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says a use-of-force investigation is now underway. Deputies did not identify the inmate, but said the inmate was arrested on March 20 for traffic violations and court attachments.
Deputies say the inmate died Friday after they were admitted to UMC on March 23. Deputies say the inmate was previously transferred to the infirmary at the Correctional Center for “abnormal actions.”
JPSO alleges the inmate charged at deputies, was able to disarm a deputy of their Taser, and discharge the Taser. No one was hurt at the moment.
Deputies say they tried to handcuff the inmate, the inmate took handcuffs, and a struggle ensued. Following the struggle, the inmate was shackled and handcuffed. That’s when JPSO deputies say the inmate became unresponsive. CPR was administered on-site and taken to UMC.
The inmate died Friday. The autopsy is underway by the Jefferson Parish coroner. The District Attorney is set to review the force investigation.
