The medical director for the Orleans Parish jail was fired abruptly, and the sheriff has since issued a statement regarding the decision.
According to Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson, Wexford Health terminated OPSO’s medical director without advance notice.
Hutson issued a statement expressing her concern over the decision:
“Wexford Health has informed us that it has terminated the employment of its Medical Director at the facility. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office was not provided advance notice of this decision.
“We have formally expressed our concern to Wexford regarding the lack of timely notification for a leadership position that carries critical responsibility for medical oversight at OPSO.
“Our priority at this time is ensuring there is no disruption in medical care for the residents in our custody. We are actively working with Wexford to understand their plan for medical leadership moving forward and to ensure that qualified medical supervision remains in place without interruption.”
It is unclear why the medical director was terminated, or when a replacement will be named.
Sheriff-elect Michelle Woodfork will take office in May.
