Mayor Helena Moreno, parish presidents and airport officials unveiled a 20-year master plan aimed at improving Armstrong International Airport and driving economic growth in Louisiana.
The plan details infrastructure improvements, including a second terminal facility, up to 15 additional gates, an improved roadway system and additional parking. In addition to the improvement, officials say plans to demolish the south campus are required to take advantage of prime real estate that will house aircraft maintenance operations, cargo expansion and more.
“While this is certainly important for our region, this is something that will impact the entire state of Louisiana,” said Mayor Helena Moreno.
Moreno says she hopes the developments will drive more travelers, conferences and even potentially another Super Bowl to the region.
“I would just say the only thing I would really be looking for is just an expansion of the different flight paths,” said Carolina Frisoli, a Tulane student traveling for spring break.
Frisoli and fellow student Sam Applegate hope more terminals and gates lead to more flight options from New Orleans, a factor local business leaders say can also drive more development.
“When we are talking to companies and talking to sight selectors, they are looking at air service as a major determinant on whether or not they’re going to be here, particularly direct air service,” said Michael Hecht, the president and CEO of Greater New Orleans Inc.
