The sounds of “Stella!” will be reverberating from a new location this year as the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival celebrates 40 years with a new offering.
On Saturday, March 21, organizers are hosting Williams Under the Oaks featuring scenes from Williams’ plays, along with new original pieces inspired by the literary genius.
This festival kickoff begins at 2 p.m. on the grounds of the New Orleans Jazz Museum and culminates with the ever-popular Stella Shouting Contest at 3 p.m.
Dozens of contenders will compete for their best rendition of “Stella,” which is an homage to Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire.” It reenacts the iconic scene where Stanley yells up to Stella.
The contest will be a fundraiser for the New Orleans Family Justice Center, a network of agencies assisting anyone affected by domestic violence. The Stella Shouting Contest is free and open to the public.
This year, the festival celebrates 40 years of highlighting contemporary literature, theater, New Orleans culture, and, of course, Tennessee Williams. Festival dates are March 25-29.
