A 16-year-old in Violet is dead, and a 15-year-old has been taken into custody after a hit-and-run on Monday.
According to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office, they responded to a call for service around 9 p.m. in reference to a person lying in the roadway in the 2200 block of Meraux Lane in Violet.
When they arrived at the scene, they found the 16-year-old on the ground and in distress. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Through surveillance video, detectives were able to determine that the boy was walking along Meraux Lane when he approached a van, at which point an altercation occurred.
As the driver attempted to leave the scene, they remained in physical contact through the driver’s side window. As the car departed, the victim was dragged, fell to the ground, and was run over.
Detectives were able to identify the driver of the van as a 15-year-old boy. He is being charged with negligent homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death.
This is an ongoing investigation.
