A family living on Dixie Drive in Hammond is facing a long road to recovery after severe storms caused a tree to fall on their home, narrowly missing an elderly resident.
Justin, who lives at the residence, said his family was watching a movie when they heard a loud noise and wind.
The storm uprooted a tree, which fell on their home. The damage left behind crumbled bricks and a brand-new car in need of repairs.
“It sounded like an explosion at first because it shattered everything,” Justin said.
While Justin and his mother are figuring out their next steps, they feel grateful to still have each other.
“She would of been right where it fell. We are both grateful,” said Justin.
The American Red Cross plans to help out families like Justin’s and others dealing with damage in Hammond.
