Following a heated Public Works Committee meeting discussion on the state of watermains across New Orleans, city leaders say they have their eye on a spot in particular that has been leaking for weeks.
City council members in New Orleans are closely monitoring a persistent water leak Uptown at the intersection of Willow and Calhoun, just blocks away from a major water main break near Panola.
Residents fear it could lead to another water main break.
City leaders say water has been leaking in this area for months, and they’re worried it could turn into the next major break if it isn’t addressed.
During a recent city council meeting, leaders pressed Sewerage and Water Board officials about several leaks across the city that they say could signal larger problems underground.
The concern comes after a series of recent water main breaks across New Orleans, including the large break near Panola that flooded roadways and forced repairs to a major pipe.
According to the Sewerage and Water Board’s work order search database, there are currently more than 1,700 water-related work orders across the city.
More than 140 of those reports involve water main leaks. City leaders say leaks like this one can sometimes be early warning signs before a pipe fails.
For now, the water continues to leak at Willow and Calhoun.
City leaders say they are keeping a close eye on locations like this across New Orleans, hoping repairs happen before another pipe gives way.
