Louisiana State police say a child was killed in a St. James Parish crash.
LSP says the two-vehicle crash happened Saturday shortly before 10 p.m. on Louisiana Highway 3213.
They say it claimed the life of 5-year-old Demond Tenner of Baker.
According to their preliminary investigation, a 2019 Hyundai Tucson was going south on LA Hwy 3213 and through a right curve in the road.
At the same time, a 2022 Chevrolet Malibu was going north and entering a left curve.
The Tucson crossed the centerline and hit the Malibu head-on. LSP says that caused the Tucson to become fully engulfed in flames.
Five people in the Tucson were moderately to seriously hurt and taken to the hospital.
The driver of the Malibu was properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries, and was transported to an out-of-area hospital, according to LSP.
Someone in the front seat of the Malibu was unrestrained, sustained serious injuries, and was also taken to an out-of-area hospital.
Tenner and a 4-year-old in the backseat were improperly restrained, police say. Tenner was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the 4-year-old was seriously hurt and taken to an out-of-area hospital.
The crash remains under investigation.
