The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port has reported an oil spill off the Louisiana coast.
According to LOOP, the oil spill happened on Thursday, Feb. 26, when crude oil was found near its offshore facility.
The leak was caused by an offshore mechanical failure, according to LOOP.
The United States Coast Guard and LOOP are continuing oil spill recovery efforts.
As of Friday, they report that an estimated 31,500 gallons of crude oil have been spilled and an estimated 25,872 gallons have been recovered.
The Coast Guard said the source of the discharge has been secured.
A total of 17 oiled birds have been reported, and responders are on scene to conduct further environmental impact assessments.
A total of 40 vessels and 330 people have responded to the spill, according to LOOP.
