New Orleans East residents elected a new councilmember Saturday night.

Jason Hughes is projected to win the seat.
Hughes is the current state representative for Orleans Parish.
He was elected to the position in 2019.
He is on many committees, including Appropriations, Vice Chair, Health and Welfare, Judiciary and House Executive Committee. He has also helped pass many pieces of legislation to help Louisianians.
He also campaigned on working with the NOPD to improve public safety and support small businesses to create economic opportunities.
Hughes will take the oath of office during an inauguration ceremony on Jan. 12.
