Sam Fender has recorded a new version of The Rolling Stones’ 1969 classic You Can’t Always Get What You Want for the 2026 John Lewis Christmas advertisement.
Unveiled on November 3, the retailer’s annual holiday campaign features Fender’s interpretation of the song, supported by a children’s choir from John Spence Community High School, where he once studied, and musicians from the Easington Colliery Band.
The three-minute commercial, titled Gloria and Pickles, stars Dame Kristin Scott Thomas as a grandmother struggling to find meaningful Christmas gifts for her grandchildren. Comedian Paul Whitehouse voices Pickles, a vintage wooden toy dog who helps guide her through the experience.
Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger welcomed Fender’s version, expressing his admiration for the singer’s work and praising the recording.
The song will also be available on limited-edition vinyl and CD, featuring Fender’s cover of Lindisfarne’s Winter Song.
Profits from physical sales will support Teenage Cancer Trust and Action for Children, depending on the retailer.
The release arrives as Fender prepares for his 2027 UK and Ireland stadium tour.
