The New Orleans City Council has unanimously voted to increase property taxes by rolling forward certain millages directly tied to the general fund.
Chief Administrative Officer Joe Giarrusso expects this move to generate $22.3 million a year in revenue.
This comes as the city is still trying to bridge a $100 million budget deficit.
On Thursday, leaders had to weigh whether or not to increase property taxes in lieu of cutting essential services like Mardi Gras cleanup, homelessness services, and infrastructure.
According to a city spokesperson, this would now reduce the city’s budget deficit to a $40 million gap.
