After former Sheriff Randy Smith stepped down following a guilty plea in an assault case, four candidates are vying to fill the position.
Smith pleaded guilty to a second-degree battery charge and a misdemeanor charge after he attacked a man inside a Covington restaurant.
He was given two years plus 90 days for the misdemeanor and will be on probation and required to complete a specialty program.
Four candidates are looking to take over the department, including former Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges, former U.S. Marshal Scott Illing, former STPSO officer David Maki, and former Interim Slidell Police Chief Daniel Seuzeneau.
Hodges, Iling, and Seuzeneau are running as Republicans, and Maki is running on the “No Party” ticket.
If no one candidate secures 50% of the vote, a runoff will be on the December ballot.
