The Audubon Zoo announced the death of one of its giraffes on Monday.
According to a statement issued by the zoo, four-year-old giraffe Fennessy died after a recent decline in the animal’s health.
According to the zoo, Fennessy’s care team noticed the animal had a lack of appetite and lethargy.
Despite examinations and ongoing supportive care, his condition continued to worsen, and the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him.
The zoo has not been able to determine the cause of Fennessy’s decline, and announced that a necropsy will be performed.
According to the zoo, Fennessy came from Abilene Zoo and was named in honor of Julian Fennessy, founder and director of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.
The zoo’s remaining giraffe on display, Maverick, will be provided extra support and care in the wake of Fennessy’s death.
