The National Hurricane Center is watching an area in the western Atlantic for possible subtropical development later this week. Based on the expected movement, this system is not expected to threaten Louisiana.
An area of low pressure will likely form along a weakening front a few hundred miles northeast of the Bahamas in the next couple of days.
As it drifts over the western Atlantic, it could take on some subtropical characteristics. A subtropical system has features of both a tropical system and a more typical low-pressure system.
As of Monday morning, development chances remain low:
- Next 48 hours: Near 0%.
- Next seven days: 20%.
The opportunity for development is expected to end by the weekend. By then, the system should move east or northeast into conditions that are less favorable for formation.
For southeast Louisiana, this is something to monitor, with no direct impacts expected based on the current outlook.
The Atlantic hurricane season continues through Nov. 30.
