Several agencies in New Orleans are working together to install litter booms in canals to capture floating trash and protect local waterways.
Staff with the Pontchartrain Conservancy, along with partnering agencies like the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has installed a litter boom in Hollygrove.
Officials said this is one of four booms that will be installed across the city as part of the Comprehensive Aquatic Litter Plan for Orleans Parish, known as CALPOP.

CALPOP is implementing year-round litter booms and seasonal storm drain debris interceptors throughout New Orleans to prevent trash from entering waterways, including Lake Pontchartrain and Bayou Bienvenue.
The initiative will also collect and analyze data to assess the impact of seasonal activities, such as Mardi Gras, on litter in waterways. This data will help inform recommendations for future litter management plans.
Officials said the booms will be installed in three major stormwater canals: St. Charles, Lower 9th, and Monticello canals.
