New Orleans Saints Head Coach Kellen Moore
KELLEN MOORE: All right. I would like to first start by saying how much we appreciate everyone who in the country of France, Paris, Versailles. Everyone who helped make this event happen. I thought it was a really great event, really great game today.
Obviously unfortunately we didn’t get the win and there’s a lot of frustration with that. We had our opportunities and ultimately they made a few more plays than us.
The margins are small in this game. When you have your opportunities you have to take advantage of them, and they made more than we did.
Q. How do you plan on fixing the run game?
KELLEN MOORE: We have a bye week and we have to put work in that. There’s too much ebbs and flows. There’s weeks when it’s good and weeks where it’s not.
We just weren’t able to get any movement and create any creases and opportunities in the run game today. 17 for 18 and Tyler’s got a couple scrambles in there, and so it wasn’t good enough. We had to throw the ball a number of times and we got to get it done.
Q. Are you at the point where you consider changes?
KELLEN MOORE: We just got to really dig in and solve this thing. Again, this is a week of — any time you go into a bye week, you go into evaluation mode as far as identifying the things you need to work on and solving those.
Q. Does that include staff changes?
KELLEN MOORE: We just got to evaluate everything. I’m not going to jump to anything right now. We just got to get better, and we’ll focus on that.
Q. Do you already feel you have a good sense of what needs to be adjusted in the run game?
KELLEN MOORE: We truly have to dig into it from step one, evaluate the whole season as a whole, and find solutions.
Q. So the main focus is going to be the running game for the bye week, right?
KELLEN MOORE: I think certainly that’s an important aspect to this thing. When you have a day like today, 17 runs for 18 yards, it’s going to be hard to win football games doing that.
So while I think there are some other things I think were real positives for our football team, we weren’t able to get that done.
Q. You said frustrations. Is that the primary one?
KELLEN MOORE: I think there’s tight margins in this game, and so when you look at third downs, you look at red zone, you look at their ability to run the football and put themselves in a lot of third and threes, third and fours, twos, they were able to run the football still in those situations because of that.
You know, they were just able to extend drives, and there are only so many possessions and you have to value the football.
Q. Will you look to make a change in the kicking game over the bye week?
KELLEN MOORE: I think it’s fair to say we have to evaluate that and go through that process in the bye week.
Q. Do you feel the late arrival this week for Daniel Carlson factored in there?
KELLEN MOORE: I don’t think so. The other team came in the same timeline as he did, so…
Q. Kellen, what’s your level of concern that it seems like it’s a lot of the same stuff? Really inconsistencies are slow starts, run games, stopping the run; is that bothersome to you that it’s the same stuff popping up every week?
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, there is always frustration with that. Again, we have to run the football better, and we can’t have a week like last week where you feel good about it and respond and put ourself in the situation we did today.
Again, there’s a lot of frustration with any of this.
Q. Do you feel like there are answers?
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, I think there’s certainly an opportunity to find those solutions. We got to dig into it. We got to evaluate it. We got to take the emotion out of it. I think that’s the challenge of the NFL seasons, is we’re all frustrated and there’s a lot of emotions with it.
You have to take the emotion out of it and truly just evaluate it and find what the next steps are.
Q. Are you guys putting too much on Shough’s plate with not having a run game? Is there too much on his shoulders the way the games are going?
KELLEN MOORE: I think you can say that about any quarterback. Any quarterback that gets the team up with the run game just allows the mixed downs to look better, less obvious pass situations. That’s certainly something we have to address.
Q. How do you evaluate the tackling? Seemed like especially on third down…
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, we have to look at it from a film perspective, but certainly it felt like they were able to steal some extra yards in some of those situations.
Q. How about the final drive? You made a stop; they were able to run it out, but the sequences…
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, again, we have opportunities and we just didn’t make them. You have a third down and then Aaron was able to extend it and get out of the pocket and earn a first down.
We just weren’t able to get it done.
Q. What did the Steelers do defensively, if anything, you didn’t see coming?
KELLEN MOORE: Just executed well. They stopped the run in some situations and made some plays.
Q. Time-outs, do you like to save yours for a little bit later in the fourth quarter?
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, we were trying to play the time-out game and understand there were also two possessions we have to potentially play with. Used one and had one or two left. But we were just trying to play that game.
Q. Inaudible.
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, probably should have been going right after Aaron’s earned first down, but obviously we got up against the two-minute warning.
Q. And jumping off the fourth and three there…
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, disappointing. Didn’t give ourselves an opportunity to go get back in the game; Offsides.
Q. Are you disappointed overall with some of the discipline things that we saw throughout this game, The penalties, things like that?
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, there’s a couple. I think it’s on both sides. Both sides had a couple of penalties here and there, and any time there is things you can control; we need to control those.
Q. You talked about how much of a joy coming here early and getting to take in Paris; does the performance make it a little more frustrating that it was such a good week leading up to that?
KELLEN MOORE: Ultimately, you’re here to win football games. That’s the ultimate result. I think we did have a good week here. We practiced well, prepared well. I like the energy. I like the physicality of our practices.
Ultimately it didn’t translate Sunday to a win perspective so that’s disappointing, but I think it’s important to recognize the things that we can carry through from this week and so I thought going to New York, playing that game getting the win, traveling here, having a really good week of practice.
We need to carry the positive things that came out of this week moving forward. Obviously we have a bye week and then we have to go for it.
Q. Why do you feel those things didn’t translate?
KELLEN MOORE: Ultimately, they played better than us; simple as that. There are opportunities in this game. We had our opportunities to go win this game. We missed those opportunities. They made enough to win it and so that’s how it goes.
Q. Inaudible.
KELLEN MOORE: Just based off the last week.
Q. How were you feeling about the fans?
KELLEN MOORE: The stadium? I thought it was a great atmosphere. I thought the NFL and France and the partnerships this created — I thought this was a phenomenal event, great energy. I thought it was a really good game.
Re: Injuries during the game.
KELLEN MOORE: A couple of guys concussion related with C.J. and Justin Reid and so everything else should be okay.
Q. What’s your evaluation of Tyler Shough today?
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, Tyler battled. He made some big plays and hard downs. There’s going to be a few we get to learn from but I thought he did a heck of a job keeping us in that and putting ourselves in a position to have chances at the end.
Re: The bye week.
KELLEN MOORE: We’ll work through this week and like any bye week, we’ll have a little bit of time to manage from a personal side, but I think that’s important for everyone part of this thing but there’s a lot of work to do during a bye week so that will be important for us.
Q. Inaudible.
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, both. It’s a combination.
Q. Are you able to work with or do anything with Jordyn Tyson’s practice window over the bye week?
KELLEN MOORE: There’s no practice times so obviously he’ll still be in the training room, recovery process. He’s building back up.
Q. How do you feel that it might be possible that you’re looking to get him back for week nine?
KELLEN MOORE: We’ll see how the medical side of this thing goes this week and we’ll see coming out of the bye week if he’s activated or not.
Q. How important or urgent is it for you to run the ball coming out of the bye considering that’s your goal?
KELLEN MOORE: Yeah, we have to solve those.
