A watermain break in New Orleans East has led to a precautionary boil water advisory for some residents, the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans said.
Water pressure dropped below 20 pounds per square inch near Morrison Road and Benson Court. SWBNO crews are working to repair the break and restore normal pressure. The agency will notify residents when water testing begins and when the advisory is lifted.
The advisory affects:
- St. Charles Canal, including Cove Drive, Crestmont Road and Danube Road, from Interstate 10 to Lincoln Beach Boulevard
- Lincoln Beach Boulevard and Hayne Boulevard, from St. Charles Canal to Paris Road
- Paris Road, from Lincoln Beach Boulevard and Hayne Boulevard to the North Interstate 10 Service Road
- North Interstate 10 Service Road, from Paris Road to Cove Drive
This is the second advisory to hit the area in less than a week.
Residents in the affected area should use bottled water or bring tap water to a rolling boil for one full minute before drinking, cooking, preparing food or brushing their teeth. Let boiled water cool before using it. If it tastes flat, shake it in a bottle or pour it between clean containers.
SWBNO says people with weakened immune systems should use bottled or boiled water to wash their hands, shower or bathe. Healthy adults can wash with tap water and soap, dry their hands, then use hand sanitizer. The agency says bottled or boiled water is the safest option.
People should avoid swallowing water while showering or bathing. Infants, young children and people with disabilities should be supervised. People with open wounds, chronic illness or weakened immune systems should use bottled or boiled water to bathe until the advisory ends.
SWBNO and the Louisiana Department of Health issue boil water advisories when pressure drops below 20 psi as a precaution. A drop in pressure could allow bacteria to enter water pipes.
