Voters have until 11:59 tonight to update their voter registration status in order to be eligible to vote in the upcoming midterm election on November 3rd.
The Secretary of State’s office shared this statement with WDSU related to a voter classification error that occurred last week:
“The Secretary of State’s IT division ran routine maintenance on October 5 where a human error caused the job to inadvertently classify approximately 67,000 voters statewide as inactive. Our staff immediately identified the issue and began correcting it. We also implemented additional safeguards to prevent this from happening again. All affected records were corrected that day. The temporary issue did not affect anyone’s eligibility or ability to vote. Under Louisiana law, a voter classified as inactive remains eligible to vote. As always, voters can verify their registration information through the Voter Portal at Geauxvote.com or through the Geaux Vote mobile app.”
The move, while quickly resolved, is moving voters to double check their statuses online ahead of the midterm election that could potentially draw a record number of people to the ballot box.
“People have expressed the highest level of social anxiety that I’ve ever seen, highest level of social and economic insecurity that I’ve seen in my decades of polling, ” said political analyst Dr. Silas Lee.
