Just weeks after Democratic strategist Mitch Landrieu said he’s weighing a presidential bid, a Louisiana Republican is saying the same.
Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) told ‘Meet the Press’ moderator Kristen Welker he will “consider” a run “if I don’t think I can be effective in the Senate anymore.”
The Louisiana Republican was first elected to the Senate in 2016. He was reelected in 2022 and is up for reelection in 2028.
“On my side of the aisle, if a bunch of goobers run, and I think they’re goobers and one of the goobers might win, and I think I could do a better job, I would consider running,” he said on ‘Meet the Press’. “But right now, I’m running for reelection.”
As of now, two Louisianians are weighing a bid. Mitch Landrieu, former Democratic mayor of New Orleans, told Politico he’s considering a run. Landrieu said his decision won’t be finalized until after the midterm elections.
Kennedy is a Vanderbilt University graduate and the former state treasurer. He grew up in Zachary.
